Battery-Recycling in Poland - A very special Transposition
Poland has not transposed the Directive 2006/66/ EC on time although the transposition process has been underway for several months. In September the Government approved a draft bill entitled the “Act on batteries and accumulators” but it was only last week when the speaker of the lower house of the Polish Parliament (the Marshall of the Seym) formally registered the draft bill and decided on its first reading at a plenary session. This reading will take place most probably in January and then the draft act will be reviewed thoroughly by the Environment Committee of the Polish Parliament. [more...]

Czech Biomass - Favourable Opportunities
In the Czech Republic the proponents of using fossil fuels for producing electricity and heat traditionally have a good position. Here too, however, sources of renewable energy (RE) are becoming increasingly important in view of the Europe-wide climate protection targets and the accompanying quotas regarding their use specified for each separate country. Among the various alternative sources of energy, the dominant forms are hydropower for producing electricity and biomass for generating heat. There are also a number of favourable investment opportunities in the field of waste recycling. [more...]

Base Metals - Will Copper still be tight in 2009?
The latest twice-yearly report by the Internal Copper Study Group’s (ICSG) Statistical Committee was published earlier this month. It forecasts that the global market will record a modest surplus of around 109 kt this year. The estimated deficit of 125 kt in the first half of the year is expected to be wiped out by the accumulation of 235 kt in the second half. This will be followed by a 277 kt surplus in 2009. Biomass in Lithuania - Energy security
The energy supply situation in Lithuania is characterised by a strong dependence on imported fossil fuels. Thirty per cent of the primary energy supply is covered by natural gas and crude oil respectively. These resources have to be almost entirely imported, mainly from Russia. Almost another third of the country’s energy needs (and even 70 per cent in the case of electricity) are provided “autonomously” by the Lithuanian Ignalina nuclear power station. However, due to the fact that this power station is of the Chernobyl type, it has to be shut down by the end of 2009 in accordance with the Lithuanian EU accession agreement, which could well lead to particularly good opportunities to implement renewable energy projects in the near future. ANALYSIS

Hazardous Waste - Much Ado
The last two years have witnessed a total of 18 takeovers and mergers – and they are not going to be the last. There are currently still more than 700 active participants on the waste disposal market throughout Europe. Further market consolidation is quite likely to occur, due to the fact that the quantity of hazardous waste is not predicted to increase greatly in the foreseeable future. [more...]

BaseMetals - Ready to Change Direction
Metals have generally moved off their lows, but show little interest in rising in spite of some bullish developments in the broader markets. These developments include a weaker dollar, stronger oil prices and a more upbeat equity market. [more...]
