Crude steel production on the upturn

World crude steel production for the 65 countries was 135 million tonnes in August 2014, an increase of 1.4% compared to August 2013.

China’s crude steel production for August 2014 was 68.9 Mt, up by 1.0% compared to August 2013. Elsewhere in Asia, Japan produced 9.3 Mt of crude steel in August 2014, an increase of 2.2% compared to August 2013. In August 2014, India produced 7.0 Mt of crude steel, an increase of 5.2% compared to the same month 2013. South Korea produced 5.3 Mt of crude steel in August 2014, up by 8.0% on August 2013.

In the EU, Germany produced 3.1 Mt of crude steel in August 2014, a decrease of -1.0% compared to August 2013. Spain produced 1.1 Mt of crude steel, down by -0.4% compared to August 2013. France’s crude steel production was 1.1 Mt, a decrease of -9.1% on August 2013. Italy produced 1.0 Mt of crude steel, down by -0.8% compared to August 2013.

Turkey’s crude steel production for August 2014 was 2.9 Mt, up by 13.9% on August 2013. In August 2014, Russia produced 6.2 Mt of crude steel, up by 5.8% over August 2013. Ukraine produced 1.8 Mt of crude steel, a decrease of -37.0% compared to the same month 2013.

The US produced 7.7 Mt of crude steel in August 2014, an increase of 2.9% compared to August 2013. Brazil’s crude steel production for August 2014 was 2.9 Mt, down by -1.4% on August 2013.

The crude steel capacity utilisation ratio for the 65 countries in August 2014 was 74.2%. It is -1.4 percentage points lower than August 2013. Compared to July 2014, it is -1.2 percentage points lower.
