Martin Engineering has published new guidance on the safe servicing of conveyor belt cleaning blades, underlining the importance of professional maintenance and monitoring systems.
The company points out that inadequate cleaning can cut the service life of belts and components by up to 30 %. A properly adjusted multi-cleaner system, by contrast, accounts for less than 5 % of belt wear while significantly improving material flow and safety.
According to Martin Engineering, safe servicing requires trained personnel and adherence to strict procedures such as lockout, tagout, blockout, and testout (LO/TO/BO/TO). Maintenance tasks include adjusting tensioners, removing buildup on blades, cleaning spillage, and replacing worn blades.
The company also highlights the role of innovative designs such as the Clean Scrape primary cleaner, which requires only initial tensioning and virtually no further maintenance. Installed diagonally around the head pulley, it typically provides up to four times the service life of urethane cleaners.
Monitoring technology further reduces risks and labor costs. Martin’s N2 Position Indicator communicates blade wear and service needs via mobile apps and dashboards, allowing technicians to focus on other critical tasks.
By combining safe servicing practices with advanced monitoring, operators can extend component life, lower costs, and enhance workplace safety.
