Flexible PET processing with infrared-based solution

A newly developed process aims to expand the scope of PET recycling. It combines extrusion with an infrared-based polymerisation step, making it possible to recycle not only bottles but also PET trays.

Austrian technology provider MAS has introduced its Iqonic Twin Hyper PET, a new platform designed for PET recycling. According to the company, the system combines a conical twin-screw extruder with an infrared-based solid-state polymerisation (SSP) step that operates without nitrogen. This approach is said to deliver stable viscosity levels, consistent colour quality, and reduced acetaldehyde content, while lowering overall energy demand.

The Hyper PET configuration is not limited to traditional bottle-to-bottle recycling. It is also capable of processing PET trays, either separately or together with bottles. This expansion of the feedstock base is intended to reduce dependence on post-consumer bottles alone.

The Iqonic Twin Hyper PET will be available in several capacity levels, from pilot-scale units to industrial applications. The official launch will take place at the K 2025 trade fair in Düsseldorf.
