Titanium Recycling in Chlor-Alkali Production

Asahi Kasei, Nippon Steel and Nippon Steel Trading have introduced a joint system for titanium recycling in chlor-alkali electrolysis cell production. The initiative focuses on processing production scrap into raw material for new pure titanium, aiming to reduce environmental impact and improve resource efficiency across the value chain.

Titanium requirements in electrolysis systems

Asahi Kasei has been active in the chlor-alkali electrolysis sector for several decades, supplying electrolyzer cells, ion-exchange membranes and related components. In these systems, pure titanium is used on the anode side due to its resistance to corrosive chlorine. The material must meet strict purity requirements to ensure corrosion resistance and process stability. The reuse of titanium scrap therefore requires controlled handling and pre-treatment to avoid contamination.

Process integration and material flow

The titanium recycling chlor-alkali system is based on cooperation along the supply chain. Scrap generated during cell production at Asahi Kasei’s site in Nobeoka is collected, sorted and processed for remelting. Digital tools are used to maintain traceability and quality control. Nippon Steel Trading prepares the material for further processing, and part of the treated scrap is supplied to Nippon Steel for use in its remelting operations for pure titanium.

Contribution to circular material use

The initiative establishes a closed-loop approach for titanium recycling chlor-alkali applications. It complements existing activities in the recycling of metals used in electrolysis cells and is intended to increase recycling rates for high-purity materials. The partners plan to expand cooperation in order to further integrate secondary raw materials into production processes.
