The event was organised by AITIIP Technology Centre as coordinator, together with INNOVARUM, Safe Food Advocacy Europe and EROSKI. Around 50 participants from the agri-food sector, public institutions and innovation networks attended.

Systemic approach across the value chain

The conference marked the conclusion of five years of work from 2021 to 2026. The project focused on food loss reduction through a systemic approach covering production, logistics, processing, distribution and consumption. Project results indicate that combining digital technologies with adapted business models can contribute to reducing food loss across multiple stages of the value chain.

Technologies and applications presented

The programme included an overview of the current status of food loss in Europe and its alignment with European policy objectives. Presentations addressed digital tools for primary production, retail applications, logistics systems and packaging technologies. Demonstrations and project results were presented alongside discussions on scaling solutions towards market readiness.

Digital platforms and logistics solutions

A digital platform for short supply chains was developed to support direct sales and the use of surplus produce. In parallel, sensor-based container systems were introduced to monitor transport and storage conditions. These systems enable improved traceability and data-based decision-making in logistics processes.

Packaging and retail measures

The project also developed bio-based and active packaging solutions designed to extend shelf life and support food loss reduction. Retail applications included labelling systems and operational tools aimed at reducing waste at the point of sale./ü

Behavioural measures and replication

Additional activities addressed consumer behaviour and impact assessment. A roadmap for replication was prepared to support the transfer of project outcomes to other regions and initiatives.

Outlook for implementation

With the completion of the project, tools, data and recommendations are available for companies, public authorities and related initiatives working on food loss reduction. The consortium plans to continue dissemination activities and cooperation with industry stakeholders to support further implementation.
