System scope and coverage
The Portugal Deposit Return System covers a broad range of ready-to-drink beverages typically sold in plastic bottles or cans. These include bottled water, carbonated soft drinks, juices and nectars, energy drinks, beer, cider and flavoured alcoholic beverages. Consumers receive refunds by returning empty containers through reverse vending machines or manual take-back points. The nationwide network comprises more than 3,000 collection points. Portugal is the first continental Southern European country to implement a nationwide deposit return system.
Operational design and logistics
The system design reflects both geographic and sector-specific requirements. A significant number of collection points are located in the hospitality sector, contributing to system accessibility. In remote and island regions, return locations also serve as storage and consolidation points. In the Azores, containers are processed into bales directly at collection sites, combining collection and storage functions to improve transport efficiency.
Integration of social mechanisms
The Portugal Deposit Return System includes an option for consumers to donate deposit refunds to charitable organisations. Participation is coordinated by retailers and SDR Portugal. This mechanism is intended to integrate social aspects into system operation while providing flexibility in the selection of beneficiary organisations.
Digital infrastructure and system management
The IT infrastructure developed by Sensoneo supports the full operational lifecycle of the system. This includes reverse logistics processes such as collection, transport, counting and settlement of returned containers. The system integrates multiple logistics operators, warehouse management functions and interfaces with government systems for compliance with waste transport documentation requirements.
Several mobile applications support system participants, including consumers, retailers, drivers and warehouse operators. An integrated e-commerce module enables collection points and retailers to order consumables such as bags and seals via a central platform. A consumer-facing application allows users to check EAN eligibility, locate collection points and review return criteria.
Technology deployment and international context
Sensoneo provides IT infrastructure for deposit return systems in several European countries, including Ireland, Romania and Austria, covering a combined population of more than 165 million. A recent development includes a centralised redemption voucher system implemented in Malta, enabling voucher validation independently of specific reverse vending machine providers.
