The project aims to process post-consumer PET bottles into recycled material for packaging applications. According to the companies, the facility is intended to support demand for recycled plastics while contributing to the development of PET collection and recycling systems in Nigeria.
Cooperation across the PET value chain
The partners combine expertise from different parts of the PET value chain. Indorama Ventures contributes technical experience in PET recycling and materials production. Nigerian Breweries, part of the Heineken Group, brings local market knowledge and access to the beverage packaging sector. Genesis Energy provides infrastructure and energy solutions for the project.
The companies state that the rPET production facility in Nigeria remains subject to regulatory approvals, technical validation and final implementation steps. The project is intended to expand recycling capacity and support the development of a local recycling value chain.
Contribution to Nigeria’s plastics policy
The planned facility corresponds with Nigeria’s National Policy on Plastic Waste Management introduced in 2020. The policy aims to ensure that all plastic packaging placed on the market is recyclable, biodegradable, compostable or reusable by 2030.
Lagos is considered a key location for recycling infrastructure because of its role as Nigeria’s commercial centre and its large packaging market. The partners expect the plant to supply recycled PET to both national and regional packaging applications.
Energy infrastructure for industrial projects
Genesis Energy develops energy and infrastructure projects in several African countries. The company reports operating and developing utility-scale generation projects with a combined capacity exceeding 780 MW across markets including Nigeria, South Africa, Zambia, Rwanda and Zimbabwe.
The company’s project portfolio includes solar, wind, battery storage and natural gas technologies. According to Genesis Energy, the planned rPET production facility in Nigeria forms part of broader initiatives to support industrial development and energy infrastructure on the continent.
Expected effects on waste management
The partners state that the project could increase the collection of PET bottles and divert plastic waste from landfill. The initiative is also expected to involve cooperation with local stakeholders to strengthen waste collection systems and recycling practices.
The agreement signed by the companies marks the start of the development phase for the rPET production facility in Nigeria. The partners indicate that further planning and regulatory procedures will determine the next steps in project implementation.
