The 2026 edition focused on the theme “Don’t Think Waste – Think Opportunity”, highlighting the role of waste as a secondary raw material and its economic relevance within circular value chains. Participants were required to submit short video presentations outlining their projects and their contribution to resource recovery and sustainable waste management.

In addition to the main awards, the GRF also recognised five start-up initiatives. A total of 15 main award winners and five start-up winners will each receive prize money of 500 US dollars.

International projects in recycling and circular economy

The Recycling Heroes 2026 winners represent a wide range of approaches across different regions. Projects include initiatives that link recycling activities with social impact, such as educational support programmes financed through the collection of recyclables, as well as community-based plastic collection systems and marine litter removal campaigns.

Several entries focus on material recovery and reuse. These include the transformation of organic waste into fertiliser, the upcycling of textile and plastic waste into new products, and the recovery of precious metals from electronic waste for use in manufacturing. Other projects address waste prevention through repair, reuse and second-hand systems.

Infrastructure and technology-driven solutions are also represented. One project in Singapore demonstrates a closed-loop water recycling system for construction sites, while other initiatives focus on decentralised recycling workshops, environmental education programmes and zero-waste living concepts.

Social and environmental impact

A number of projects combine recycling activities with social objectives. These include programmes that create income opportunities through waste collection, support public health through improved sanitation practices, or provide access to renewable energy through recycling-based funding models.

Educational components are a recurring element. Several initiatives engage schools, students and local communities to promote recycling practices, resource conservation and behavioural change.

Start-up initiatives recognised

The start-up category within Recycling Heroes 2026 highlights early-stage projects with a focus on innovation and community engagement. These include student-led reuse systems, products made from hard-to-recycle materials such as coffee cups, and grassroots recycling movements that divert significant volumes of waste from landfill through volunteer-based structures.

Other recognised initiatives address links between waste management and public health, as well as individual entrepreneurship in upcycling and material reuse.

Global scope of Recycling Heroes 2026

The Recycling Heroes 2026 competition reflects the global nature of recycling markets and circular economy development. Winning projects originate from Africa, Europe, Asia, Australia and the Americas, illustrating regional diversity in waste management challenges and solutions.

The selected initiatives demonstrate practical applications of recycling, reuse and resource efficiency across different sectors, including municipal waste management, construction, textiles, plastics and electronic waste.
