Professional background in EU policy and waste management
Vanya Veras has more than 30 years of experience in European affairs, environmental policy, sustainability and stakeholder engagement across European institutions, industry and local authorities, including 20 years in waste management. With a background in economics, her work focuses on the interface between regulatory frameworks, market conditions and investment requirements linked to sustainable development.
Experience across public and private sectors
Veras began her career in Brussels in 1995 and has since worked across institutional, municipal and corporate environments. She held leadership functions in the waste management policy field and contributed to the development of Municipal Waste Europe as a sector organisation.
Her previous roles include Environmental Affairs Manager at Coca-Cola Hellenic in Athens, where she worked on energy, packaging and resource management. She also served as Special Advisor on Waste to the Mayor of Piraeus, focusing on municipal waste systems, investment planning and procurement structures.
Focus on WEEE policy and circular economy
The EERA Secretary General appointment comes at a time of ongoing revision of the WEEE Directive and continued policy emphasis on circular economy implementation in Europe. In this context, the role involves representing the interests of professional WEEE treatment operators and supporting regulatory and market developments for secondary raw materials.
