The report will examine current challenges and future opportunities for steel packaging recycling in Europe and set out policy recommendations aimed at keeping packaging steel within a circular material loop for as long as possible.
The upcoming publication follows earlier reports released in 2018 and 2022, which reflected developments in the European packaging market and changes in the regulatory framework. Each report has focused on improving both the quantity and quality of steel recycling as part of broader efforts to advance the circular economy.
Drawing on more than 40 years of experience in initiatives supporting improved collection, sorting and recycling of steel packaging, the new report will be presented at a high-level event entitled Shaping Europe’s Circular Future. The event will take place in Brussels on 21 April and will bring together stakeholders from across the value chain and policy environment.
The conference will address policy considerations linked to the implementation of the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation and the expected adoption of the Circular Economy Act. Discussions will focus on measures to accelerate circularity, including incentives for high-quality recycling and the further development of Extended Producer Responsibility systems to support circular material flows in Europe.
As part of the anniversary activities, Steel for Packaging Europe has also introduced a dedicated anniversary logo and launched a new section on its website outlining key milestones in the development of steel packaging and recycling in Europe.
Founded in 1986, the association has accompanied significant structural changes within the industry. Over this period, the recycling rate for steel packaging in Europe has increased steadily, reflecting both the material’s suitability for recycling and long-term cooperation among industry stakeholders. In its anniversary year, Steel for Packaging Europe will continue its engagement with members and partners to support circular economy objectives and resilient recycling systems in Europe.
