Tomra Recycling has published its latest eBook titled “AI in Recycling: Unlocking New Possibilities”. The digital guide focuses on the growing role of artificial intelligence (AI), particularly deep learning, in transforming recycling processes and advancing material circularity.
According to the company, the eBook aims to demystify deep learning by outlining how the technology works and where it is already being applied in recycling. Examples include the use of large datasets to improve sorting accuracy, the combination of deep learning with established sensor technologies in optical sorters, and new solutions for separating difficult-to-classify materials. The publication also reviews the shift from manual sorting to AI-driven automation and discusses how these advances could pave the way toward fully transparent recycling plants.
The document highlights benefits such as improved flexibility, higher material purity, new high-value material streams and increased plant transparency. Among the technologies referenced are Tomra’s Gain Next solution for food-grade plastics and aluminum recovery, as well as the Poly Perception waste analyzer, which applies AI to track and classify waste streams in real time. The eBook also places AI in the context of evolving European regulations, including the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which sets ambitious circular economy targets.
Fabrizio Radice, SVP & Head of Sales and Marketing at Tomra Recycling, emphasized the purpose of the new publication: “We believe our new eBook will serve as a valuable resource for the global recycling community, providing a clear understanding of how deep learning is not a futuristic concept, but rather a tangible solution that is already delivering significant benefits and paving the way for a truly circular economy. By demystifying the technology and showcasing real-world applications, our aim is to encourage recyclers and processors to embrace the transformative potential of AI and explore how it can help them achieve their operational goals, meet rising demand for recycled content and take advantage of new, expanded market opportunities.”
The eBook is available for free download.
