Novelis publishes strong quarterly results

| Novelis has reported a net income of $6 million for the third quarter of fiscal year 2016. Excluding tax-effected special items, the company reported net income of $32 million in the third quarter of fiscal 2016 compared to $54 million in the third quarter of fiscal 2015.

Umicore announces successful year

| According to the Belgian company’s statement, revenues were up by 11 per cent compared to 2014 with with strong growth in Catalysis and Energy & Surface Technologies more than offsetting the impact of lower metal prices on the recycling activities.

Aluminium beverage can recycling at new record high

| Today, Umicore and IndustriALL Global Union renewed their Global framework Agreement on Sustainable Development for a period of four years. The agreement covers human rights (including collective bargaining and equal opportunities), safe and healthy working conditions and environmental considerations.

Separating rare earth metals with UV light

| Researchers from the KU Leuven Department of Chemical Engineering have discovered a method to separate two rare earth elements – europium and yttrium – with UV light instead of with traditional solvents. Their findings, which were published in Green Chemistry, offer new opportunities for the recycling of fluorescent lamps and low-energy light bulbs.

Recycling of rare-earth elements from fluorescent and energy saving lamps

| KU Leuven Chemists have developed a process, based on ionic liquid technology, for the recycling of the metals europium and yttrium from collected fluorescent and energy saving lamps. The metals are directly reusable in new lamps. Compared to traditional solvents, the ionic liquid has a multitude of advantages, including its selectivity for metal dissolution and its reusability.
