Project develops microalgae applications

Aimplas is participating in the European MULTIPLY project, launched in June 2025 to develop industrial applications based on microalgae. The initiative is funded by the Horizon Europe programme and brings together 17 partners to develop and scale ten bio-based products for five industrial sectors.

The objective is to support the market introduction of microalgae-derived ingredients as alternatives to fossil-based and food-based raw materials.

The project focuses on five microalgae species: diatoms, Arthrospira (Spirulina), Tetraselmis, Nannochloropsis and Chromochloris zofingiensis. These species are used to develop applications for the food, animal feed, cosmetics, lubricants, and biomaterials and packaging sectors. Target products include natural colourants and protein-rich food ingredients, feed components enriched with algae-derived compounds for aquaculture, cosmetic oils and esters, bio-based lubricants, compostable films, paper coatings and packaging materials based on algae oils and starch.

Within the consortium, Aimplas is developing materials and formulations derived from microalgae compounds and polymers for packaging applications. Activities include the formulation of recyclable barrier coatings for paper substrates that provide water and grease resistance and are intended to replace conventional paper and polyethylene multilayer structures. In addition, Aimplas is contributing to the development of cosmetic packaging incorporating microalgae-derived materials, such as functional compounds, encapsulation matrices and structural components. The aim is to enhance product stability and reduce the need for preservatives in cosmetic formulations.

The project also includes pilot activities for nutrient recovery and the testing of a monitoring tool to support process optimisation. Initial batches of algae extracts and oils will be supplied for product development. Parallel work streams address sustainability assessment and market acceptance, supporting the industrial uptake of microalgae-based materials and ingredients in Europe.
