"Key challenges, including insufficient collection, unregulated imports of plastic materials, and a lack of enforcement measures, continue to hinder the expansion of the recycling industry," commented Herbert Snell, Chair of the PRE HDPE Working Group. "The plastic recycling industry calls for urgent actions to alleviate the pressure that the current market situation puts on recyclers and safeguard the achievement of the European legislative targets."

Although exports decreased in 2024, the amount was still 58.5% higher than in 2004 (+13.2 million tonnes).

The GRECO project kick-off will take place in Valencia at Aimplas on 16-17 June 2025. New research from BB-REG-NET has found that the UK government's existing tax regime is working against its stated ambitions for a circular economy. The study points out that while official strategies call for more reuse, repair, and recycling, fiscal policies continue to favor linear consumption and disposal.
