The increase ranged from 2.8% in Czechia to 38% in Greece, while in Malta, Lithuania, and Slovakia employment decreased in the same period.
Italy, Germany, and Portugal experienced a significant increase of employment in energy resource management (+73%, +34% and +48%, respectively) in 2022 compared with the previous year. In waste management, employment in Italy decreased by 2.5%, while the employment went up in France and Germany by 1.6% and 4.6% and remained stable in Spain.
Across the EU countries, most employment in the environmental economy related to management of energy resources (34.8% on average). However, the share varied significantly across countries. It was highest in Luxembourg (70.5%), followed by Sweden (68.3%) and Italy (61.5%). By contrast, Malta registered 3.7%, Hungary 12.7% and Cyprus 14.3% of employment in this part of the environmental economy.
