Kuusakoski strengthens UK recycling business

Kuusakoski has acquired the remaining 39% stake in SWEEEP Kuusakoski, making the UK-based waste electrical and electronic equipment recycling company a wholly owned subsidiary of Kuusakoski Oy. The Finnish recycling group previously held a 61% majority share.

SWEEEP Kuusakoski operates one of the UK’s largest waste electrical and electronic equipment recycling facilities in Kent near London. The site processes around 25% of the UK’s mixed WEEE stream and is regarded as one of Europe’s more advanced recycling plants for electronic waste.

The acquisition concludes a partnership that began in 2010, when Kuusakoski became a co-owner to support the company’s expansion in the UK recycling market. According to the company, the transaction supports Kuusakoski’s strategic focus on multimetal recycling and material sourcing.

Operations remain unchanged

The companies stated that the acquisition will not affect daily operations, customer relationships or employees. SWEEEP Kuusakoski will continue operating under its existing brand and organisational structure within the Kuusakoski Recycling group. Barry Walker will remain chief executive officer.

The founders and minority shareholders, Patrick and Pamela Watts, will retire from operational roles following the transaction. Since establishing the company in 2007, they have overseen the development of SWEEEP Kuusakoski into a significant player in the UK WEEE recycling sector.

Timo Kuusakoski, business development director at Kuusakoski, said the UK company had established strong expertise in the country’s demanding WEEE recycling market. He described full ownership as a logical next step as electronic waste remains an important material stream for the group.
