Under the collaboration, R3vira will expand its “peque-ruta” micro-route collection system from 12 to 24 active routes by 2026. The expansion is intended to increase the recovery and recycling of high-impact polystyrene and expanded polystyrene within Mexico City.
Investment from the Polystyrene Recycling Alliance will be used to enhance operational infrastructure, including the installation of additional densification equipment, the expansion of warehouse capacity and the development of the local workforce across all boroughs of Mexico City. Recovered materials will be processed through R3vira’s existing cooperation with Resirene, enabling closed-loop recycling into recycled polystyrene resin suitable for use in new packaging applications and compliant with U.S. Food and Drug Administration requirements.
The collaboration illustrates how coordinated industry involvement, targeted investment and secured end-market demand can support the scaling of polystyrene recycling systems. By combining localized collection models with downstream processing capacity, the project is intended to contribute to the long-term integration of polystyrene into circular material flows in North America.
