New sorting plant for aluminium

Hydro and Austin AI want to develop new technologies for the sorting of aluminium alloys.

Part of this cooperation is the installment of a pilot scale sorting facility based on laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) at Hydro's research and development center by Austin AI. The development mainly aimes at the sorting of 5xxx and 6xxx alloys for the automotive industry.

"By developing robust processes, based on LIBS technology, Hydro can accomodate the needs of our automotive industry customers for converting their production scrap today - and help to master future challenges in end-of-live recycling for cars, with more aluminium in them", says Klaus Vieregge, head of Hydro's R&D centre.
