Autonomous turning without an operator

Backhus has produced self-propelled windrow turners for more than 40 years. The Alpha 55 adds automated operation to this concept. The machine detects windrows, turns the material and changes windrows without direct human intervention. It also identifies uneven windrows and corrects them during the turning process.

The system is designed to reduce personnel workload and increase safety in demanding applications. These include biowaste composting, biological drying of municipal waste, sewage sludge treatment and contaminated soil remediation. Operators can still control the machine manually by remote control when required.

Electric drive with configurable battery

The Alpha 55 uses a high-voltage electric drive system. Eggersmann says the system supports short charging intervals and stable daily productivity. The battery capacity can be selected according to the operating process, application profile and site requirements.

The electric drive produces no local emissions. This allows the machine to operate in enclosed buildings. Eggersmann also expects lower operating costs through the combination of automation and electrification.

Sensors record windrow volume

The machine uses sensors for both automation and data collection. The system records the windrow in real time and calculates its volume. Operators receive quantity data for material on site and can estimate expected compost output more accurately.

Established design without driver’s cab

The Alpha 55 retains typical Backhus features, including maintenance platforms on both sides, an adjustable and reversible rotor, fold-out track clearers with ground contour adjustment and a rear flap to reduce windrow offset.

The driver’s cab is no longer required. LED strips on the machine body show the operating status and indicate faults.
