The European Commission has presented an action plan for the electrification of Europe as well as proposals for the revision of the European emissions trading system.

With the amendment of the Industrial Emissions Directive, landfills are once again moving into the focus of European environmental policy. The current state of the art shows that modern plants are already making an important contribution to climate protection. At the same time, there is still considerable potential, especially in the case of old landfills. The study "State of the art of waste disposal at landfills in Germany and its contribution to cli-mate protection in preparation for the work for a BAT leaflet on landfills" by IFAS and HiiC-CE on behalf of the Federal Environment Agency presents a comprehensive inventory and shows which technical and regulatory developments will shape the industry in the future.

The use of fiber composites is growing rapidly worldwide. However, with increasing production, energy consumption, material losses and waste volumes are also increasing significantly. The study "Mapping the global flow of fiber-reinforced polymer composites and supply chain energy requirements" by American scientists shows in detail how much energy is actually required for the production of composites, where large quantities of production waste are generated along the supply chain, and why recycling has so far only played a minor role. The study was published in "Resources, Conservation & Recycling".

The European composite recycling sector is entering a decisive phase.

The world is at a turning point in dealing with growing waste. Poor waste management has significant consequences, but at the same time offers opportunities: investing in sustainable and efficient systems can boost growth, jobs and innovation. In particular, the circular economy, which focuses on reuse and value retention, can turn waste into an engine of sustainable development. The World Bank Group's "What a Waste 3.0" report provides up-to-date data and analysis on global trends in waste management.

The European research project FUELGAE has completed its second implementation phase and reported further progress in the development of sustainable transport fuels from microalgae.

As the study "High voltage selective fragmentation on Swedish mineral fraction of incineration bottom ash (MIBA)" by scientists from Sweden and Switzerland shows, high-voltage fragmenta-tion opens up new perspectives for the recovery of metals from waste incineration ash. Addi-tional metal contents of up to 2.2 percent could be tapped, while at the same time new, more homogeneous material flows were created. However, regulatory limits and material challenges have so far slowed down industrial implementation. The study was published in "Waste Ma-nagement".

Stadler has opened a new office in Japan, expanding its presence in a market that is increasingly focused on material recovery and recycling. The move reflects growing demand for sorting technologies as operators seek to recover more recyclable materials from waste streams, particularly plastics and municipal waste.
